In numismatics, "PROOF" quality -in French "Belle Epreuve" (or BE) or in German "Polierte Platte, Spiegelglanz" (or PP)- is a quality feature of a currency whose relief is mat and whose field is mirror like.
Striking is specially made using new, pre-selected and specially machined planchets as well as new striking devices. In most shops, these coins are struck one by one by a coin-maker who checks the quality of each part after the strike. Upon striking the piece is handled with care and enclosed in a sealed package, under vacuum. It is the highest level of perfection and conservation in numismatics.

In numismatics, "Brilliant Uncirculated" -in French "Brillant Universel" or in German "Stempelglanz", means an intermediate quality between striking of current coins and the superior quality referred to as "PROOF". These coins minted in limited edition, using new planchets, and have kept their original gloss. |

UNC, the abbreviation for uncirculated (not circulated), describes a coin that has never been circulated although it was initially planned for current traffic and not for collection. Therefore the defects of the strike, luster or surface are minor and the entire coin is of good quality. These minor defects are inherent to the quality of strikes and their mode of packaging (bags, rolls ...). |
